As most of you already know, we have been looking for something to replace Rachel’s 2004 VW Jetta for a couple of months. Well the search is over! We have a new addition to the family, a 2007 Honda Odyssey EXL 8 passenger mini-van. 😀
On Saturday morning I checked Craigslist and found a 2007 Honda Odyssey at a used car lot in Roseville. It matched all of the criteria on our wishlist:
- accommodates 3 rear facing seats in 2nd row
- 2006 or newer
- clean title/no accidents
- leather interior
- less than 80,000 miles
- preferably 1 owner
- 8 passenger
- Clean CarFax
Our preference was to purchase through a private party as opposed to a used car dealer. I had contacted a few private sellers, but they either wanted too much $$$ or something major was wrong with the vehicle. I don’t mind haggling with car salesmen/dealers, but some of them are just plain dishonest!
Anyway, off we went to Roseville, it’s about an 1 1/2 hour drive from our house. We arrived at about 12pm, High Noon, in the summertime it gets ridiculously hot there. Saturday was no different! As we are driving in to the lot, the low fuel sound goes off in Rachel’s Jetta. I swear we didn’t plan it that way! 🙂 Anyway, we went for a test drive in the Odyssey. The van was super clean and only had 74,000 miles. Rachel noticed a vibration between 25-30 mph and our salesman said he would have it fixed if we purchased the car. We wanted to trade in the Jetta and had $1000 to put down on the Odyssey. I had already been pre-approved at my Credit Union. (2.4% which is an excellent rate for a used car loan!!!) So – we do the dance and finally come to a number that works for the both of us.
There is a tire shop next to the car lot and they were having them check out the vibration in the Odyssey. It turned out to be a bad wheel bearing. Our salesman held true to his promise to have it fixed, the only problem was that it was going to take a couple of hours. They gave us a choice, we could either wait for it to be fixed now OR we make an appointment to come back and have it fixed at a later date. Ummm, let me think about that for a second, No Brainer – We’re waiting!!!
The dealership was a family operation, run by a father and his 2 sons. Dad had over 30 years experience selling cars, his eldest son was chasing his dream of running his own dealership. What a super nice family! They offered to get In-n-Out burgers for us while we wait, “sure – I’ll have a double-double, Rachel just wants a shake?” When they get back they have burgers and fries for everyone. Rachel was so grateful, she didn’t know she was hungry until the food got there! Anyway, around 4pm they check and the Odyssey won’t be ready until 5 or 530pm. They offer to loan us a car so that we can go to the Roseville Galleria (giant shopping mall!). Ok, sure we can do that. Rachel and I did some people watching to pass the time. We went back around 530pm and the Odyssey wasn’t ready yet! 😦 I felt bad, because the family was having a big graduation party that night for their sister. 6pm rolls around and finally we’re on the road headed home!
