September 17th, 2016 – First Birthday Luau

birthdaycake

On Saturday we had a huge birthday luau for the boys’ 1st birthday. We booked it at a city park that is close to our house. The weather was perfect – mid 80’s with very little wind. The party was well attended with around 100 adults & 40 kids! We had 2 other Triplet families in attendance, as well as several Twin families. We are extremely fortunate to have an active/friendly multiples community in our area and they are very supportive of each other! 🙂

John A. – Proprietor/Head Chef, Polar Ice

Polar Ice (facebook link) catered our event. John & his wife Valerie went above & beyond, while Lou & Mike helped man the grills and the ice machine. We had so many compliments on how delicious the food was. It was a hot day in Northern California, so the Shaved Ice was really a treat for our guests. 🙂

For lunch we had:

  • BBQ Chicken
  • Fried Rice
  • Beanie Weenies
  • Fresh Garden Salad
  • Fruit Salad
  • Macaroni Salad
  • Dinner Rolls
  • Complimentary Shaved Ice
  • Chiquita Mini Bananas, Nachos & Hot Dogs for the kids!

The boys loved all of the attention that they were getting from our friends & family! I have to admit, I was a little worried that they might have a meltdown from all of the attention/people. But it never happened! It was nice that so many of our cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters & calabash family of friends gathered to celebrate the boys first birthday. Some were seeing them for the first time! Doctor Spivak who delivered Rachel’s older son Avery was in attendance, as well as Registered Nurse Amy S. from Kaiser’s Walnut Creek NICU.

A fun time was had by all!

June 14, 2016 – Out with OLD, In with the NEW!!!

Hey everybody,

We will be celebrating the boy’s 9 month birthday on Thursday June 16th, 2016. There are lots of ‘New Happenings’ around our place and this brings great joy to our lives. Keoni has been army crawling, Kaleo can roll across the entire living room & Makani is showing signs of wanting to walk (skipping the crawling stage completely!) Rachel & I are also feeling a little sentimental, kind of like this is an ‘End of an Era’. 😥

OutWithOldCover

The phrase ‘Out with the OLD, In with the NEW’ – pretty much sums up what has been happening around our house. Apparently this process started WAY before the boys were born or even conceived!

Here is a quick summary:

Residential

Before we started dating – Rachel lived in a 1 bedroom duplex downtown and I was renting a bedroom in a house that was close to work. December of 2014 we both decided that her place wasn’t big enough, so we started looking for new accommodations. I found a great deal on a 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath condo on the other side of town. We signed the lease agreement at the end of January and moved in 1 week before the boys were conceived. (the boys were conceived during Rachel’s birthday getaway vacation to Playa del Carmen)

God was definitely working in our lives!!!

Automobiles

Rachel owned a 2004 VW Jetta 4 door & I had a 1998 BMW 328iS 2 door. In June of 2015 we traded the Jetta in on a 2007 Honda Odyssey. (Probably one of the best investments we have made to date!) Neither of us ever thought we would own a minivan, but it has been a lifesaver. I could not imagine trying to haul the boys and all of their stuff around without it.

In March of 2016 I sold my beloved BMW and bought a 2006 Infinity M45 4 door. It was hard giving up the BMW for a ‘grown up’ car (especially one with all of those doors) but the 350HP Infiniti V8 engine made me happy!!! 🙂

Clothes

We were gifted so many cute outfits that the boys no longer fit in. Rachel has passed most of them on to other Families with multiples from her Facebook group & SCMoMs. It is cute to see other babies sporting those same outfits!

Fisther Price My Little Snug-a-Puppy Deluxe Bouncers (x2)

The boys loved their My Little Snug-a-Puppy Deluxe Bouncers, but they were getting too big for them. We put them up for free on the neighborhood website Nextdoor.com and a couple that is expecting Twins (their first kiddos) contacted us about them! We are so happy that our bouncers will be going to another Multiple family that needs them and will put them to good use. The cool thing is that they live about 1/2 a mile from us, in the same complex as we do. I am sure we will see them at our community pool more and more as they approach their delivery date.

FPBouncy

Fisher Price Rock-n-Plays (x3)

The boys are too big for their Rock-n-Plays and we haven’t used them in over a month. We offered them to the expectant twin couple that we just met, but we aren’t sure that they want/need them yet. These were a life saver when we first brought the boys home from the NICU. Especially since we live in a 2 story house with all of the bedrooms located on the 2nd story. The boys slept exclusively in these for the first 3 months that they were at home. Because of the incline position they also helped to relieve colic & reflux.

Bouncer

Fisher Price Jumperoos (x2)

We are right on the cusp of retiring the jumperoos. They have a 25 lb maximum capacity & Keoni is tipping the scales at 23 lbs. These helped to build the boy’s core strength. We also used them to contain/entertain Keoni after he learned how to army crawl. Behind Makani, you can see the multi-colored gates that we use, now that Keoni is too big for the jumperoos!

Fisher Price My Little Snug a Puppy Swing & Cradle

Makani was the only one that really got to use the Swing & Cradle. Mostly because his brothers were too chunky to fit in it! 🙂 He enjoyed napping in it while his brothers napped in the Pack n Play/Co-Sleeper. We passed it on to another Multiple family through SCMoMs.

Cradle&Swing

Graco Swing By Me

Keoni got to use this swing almost exclusively. It really calmed & soothed him when he was fussy. The other 2 boys rarely got to take it for a spin. This was also passed on to another SCMOM.

Graco Snugride Click Connect 35 infant car seats

The boys haven’t technically outgrown the Graco infant car seats, but they are getting close. I switched them out – 2 weeks ago with New Diono RXT Radian convertible seats. The boys love the new Dionos (rear facing until 2 years old), they have plenty of room to grow and they also have more of an upright seating position (better to take in the views when we go on roadtrips!) I installed 1 of the Gracos in my car until the boys outgrow them completely.

Strollers

We used Baby Trend Universal Double & Single Snap-N-Go Stroller Frames with the Graco infant car seats for the first 7 months. They were really convenient as the car seat fits perfectly in the stroller frame. They also don’t draw as much attention as the triple strollers when we are out on the town. When the boys were just 3 1/2 months old, I found a great deal on a Berg Runabout 3 seat stroller on Craigslist. The only thing missing was the sunshade for each side. I had my sail maker friend John, Owner of Amen Sails whip some up in his workshop and now the boys are styling and protected from Prying, Germy Strangers – as well as UV rays.

That’s about it for this update!

April 7, 2016 – Working 5 to 9…

I thought I would have some fun with Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 lyrics.

5to9MonthCover

Just a little parody mocking my new schedule: 5am to 9pm 🙂

Tumble outta bed and I stumble in to the shower
Get myself washed up before the witchin’ hour
Yawn and stretch and try to come to life
Jump outta the shower and the blood starts pumpin’
Over in the nursery the babies start jumpin’
With folks like me on the job from 5 to 9

Workin’ 5 to 9, what a way to make a livin’
Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’
They just use you up and they never give you credit
It’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it
5 to 9, for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fat promotion
Want to move ahead but the boys just won’t let me
I swear sometimes those kids are out to get me!

They are your dreams, that’s all that really matters
You do your part on their way up the ladder
But the dreams you got yeah they’ll never go away
You’re in the same boat with just a few of your friends
Today is the day, that your ship has come in
Oh the tide has turned and it’s all rolled your way

Workin’ 5 to 9, what a way to make a livin’
Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’
They just use you up and they never give you credit
It’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it
5 to 9, yeah they got you where they want you
This is your life, and you dreamt about it, didn’t you?
It’s called being a dad no matter what the others call it
And you spend your life givin’ money out your wallet

5 to 9, whoa what a way to make a livin’
Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’
They just use you up and they never give you credit
It’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it

5 to 9, yeah they got you where they want you
This is your life, and you dreamt about it, didn’t you?
It’s called being a dad no matter what they call it
And you spend your life givin’ money out your wallet

5 to 9, working 5 to 9

LOL – that’s it!!!

The boys are doing great, hope everybody has a blessed week.

March 16, 2016 – 6 Months!!!

Happy 6 month birthday to our beautiful boys!!!

6MonthCover

I am amazed at how quickly the time has passed. It seems like just yesterday we were at the Valentin Imperial Maya, an Adults Only All Inclusive in Playa del Secreto, Mexico. (it’s been 13 months to be exact!) And now we are celebrating our 3 precious little boy’s 6 month birthday. Life is so unexpected and wonderful at times!!!

Even though they are only 6 months old, Kaleo & Makani struggle to fit into 12 month outfits and Keoni has almost outgrown the 18’s. These are going to be some BIG boys!!!

20160316_133337_resized

Kaleo, Makani & Keoni

We have been so blessed to have these three little dudes in our life! As a first-time father I didn’t know what to expect. Life has changed in so many ways (for the better)! I am constantly in awe of these boys, you are so damn cute and are thriving in every way imaginable!!! Sure, there have been some tough times (see The Joy of 3 Hour Feedings!) but I wouldn’t trade this experience for all of the money in the world.

True Love can not be defined by a person that does not have a child…

Rachel and I sincerely want to thank all of our friends, family and the SCMoMs group – you have helped us raise these boys and all of you have become an integral part of their life! Thank you so much for being there for us!!!

A special message to Plamen & Cveti (currently 33 weeks expecting GGB triplets!!) – we just want you to know that you are constantly in our thoughts and prayers, we send all of our love to you as you prepare to embark on this crazy journey of parenting triplets.

And to my beautiful wife, partner and best friend – Rachel, I Love You!!! Thank you for being there – every step of the way!!!

That’s all for now…

March 2, 2016 – Solids…

Hey everybody!

Just thought I would post a quick update and let everyone know what’s been happening around our place the past few weeks.

FoodCover

We started the boys on baby food 7 Days ago (actually we fed them poi on Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t really count!) For the first 5 nights we mixed Earth’s Best Organic Whole Grain Oatmeal Cereal with Similac formula. Kaleo & Keoni loved it!!! Makani, not so much, but he’s still learning how to eat. The boys all did really well. Kaleo & Keoni were practically begging for more after the bowl was gone. 🙂

Last night we split 1 – 4 oz. jar of Earth’s Best Organic Winter Squash between the 3 boys. Rachel suggested that I pour half of the jar into a bowl in case they didn’t finish it all. (Yeah Right!)  Once again, Kaleo & Keoni were over the top – loving every spoonful! Makani is just getting used to eating from a spoon, but he still managed to eat some of it. It was just a lot less than his two brothers!!! 🙂

It was suggested that we introduce new foods slowly, and to feed them vegetables first – then fruits. That is the main reason we fed them the same flavor for 5 days before switching! Next up – carrots!

As far as growth, all 3 of the boys are growing like flowers in the spring! I purchased some new pajamas for Keoni, size – 18 months (because the 12 month pj’s are too small). It feels like Kaleo has caught up to Makani (weight wise) but he is still the runt! lol 😉

Rachel continues to experience a tremendous amount of pain in her stomach & back from diastasis recti (separation of the abdomen walls). She has been doing the core strengthening exercises recommended by the MUTU system. She has another physical therapy appointment tomorrow, we’ll see what Kaiser has to say.

Sonoma County Mothers of Multiples (SCMoMS) is having their  swap meet this Saturday. This organization has been such a blessing to be a part of! We are so lucky to be able to find this amazing group of people, everyone is so supportive!

That’s all for now!

Take care…

February 16, 2016 – Happy 5 Month Birthday!!!

Has it really been 5 months???

CRAZY!!!

5month

We are finally starting to settle in to a groove. I really like this stage of being a father. The boys are starting to show off their little personalities, as well as their likes & dislikes.

  • Kaleo is our little serious guy, he likes to talk, smile & be held. While being the smallest in stature, he makes up for it with his vocal chords! When he is unhappy he lets the whole neighborhood know about it. Kaleo is also the best eater. Our little water boy, he just loves being in the water
  • Makani is our little shy boy, he has the cutest damn smile, he doesn’t talk much – but when he does, you can’t shut him up! Makani can sit a stare outside for hours, I am guessing he is going to be our nature boy. 🙂
  • Keoni is one big happy dude, even when he is crying he still manages to slip a smile or a laugh in to the routine. He doesn’t understand why he is fussy, he is so eager to please and make you smile. He also likes to talk and is learning all kinds of ‘new sounds’!

This is the “FUN” part that everyone was telling me about! I am a little worried that this might just be the calm before the storm!

Poi

Thanks to my niece & sister, the boys got to try their first ‘solid food’ on Valentine’s Day. Fresh poi (ground taro root) from Hawaii – what a treat! We fully expected Keoni (our big boy) to be the master of the spoon, but surprisingly Kaleo (our little guy) earned the title of ‘Poi Boy’ his first step on the journey to becoming a ‘True Local Boy’!!! He really loved it and couldn’t get enough 🙂 He ended up finishing off the rest of the poi bowl on Monday – who would have guessed?

Valentine’s Day Dinner –

Steak & Poi – yumm

I tried to get a photo perspective of how big each boy is at this stage of the process, I am not sure if I succeeded or not:

5monthBirthday1

As far as our daily routine goes, here is a breakdown.

We are down to 4 feedings per day, @8 ounces per feed. Bedtime is around 730pm and they usually wake up around 630am. ***Kaleo & Makani need some nighttime intervention, while Keoni sleeps through the night most of the time.***. They all nap 2 to 3 times per day, up to 2 hours at a time. They also get a bath before bed on Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday nights. 🙂

That’s it for now! Hope everybody had a great Valentine’s Day!!!

February 4, 2016 – Happy Birthday Rachel!!!

Today is Rachel’s 42nd birthday, Happy Birthday Sweetheart!!!

42Cover

After work yesterday, I went to the Hallmark store & picked out a smarmy birthday card for Rachel. I wasn’t sure when I would have time to fill it out, but figured I would cross that bridge when I got there!

The best time, would probably be in the morning before Rachel woke up. I get up at 5am everyday, shower and feed the boys as they wake up. Well today was a little different – after my morning shower I went out and got the birthday card from the car. I thought of some heart felt, sentimental things to say & that’s when it hit me! (insert evil laugh here 😀 ) It was only 6am, but if I got the babies up a little early – they could all sign mama’s birthday card too! So I woke the boys up, brought them downstairs & gave them a pen. (I thought it turned out pretty cute!) I didn’t even move their hands or arms, this is all them! 🙂

BoysBirthdayMessage

Tonight my sister & mother-in-law are coming over to watch the boys while we go out to dinner. WoW – 2 date nights in the first 2 months of the year!!! It’s going to be a good year, lol!

I’ll add some date night pictures tomorrow.

I hope everybody has a great day!

Once again, Happy Birthday Rachel!!! I know this isn’t quite what you thought it was going to be like – but “I” think it’s probably BETTER!!!

Love Always,

Paul – Kaleo, Makani & Keoni!!!
